Bamboo Containment Barrier Installation
HDPE bamboo barrier installation for controlling invasive bamboo and preventing underground rhizome spread.
This customer originally planned to remove all of the bamboo from his property. After evaluating the situation, we explained that complete removal wasn't the only option. Since he enjoyed the privacy and appearance the bamboo provided, we recommended installing a professional bamboo barrier instead. Before the installation, bamboo rhizomes had spread throughout the yard, forcing the homeowner to constantly cut back new growth to keep it contained. By installing a dedicated bamboo barrier, we were able to contain the bamboo and allow the customer to enjoy it without worrying about it taking over the rest of the property.
BioBarrier® Root Barrier Installation
BioBarrier root control system installed to redirect and suppress tree roots near residential air conditioning units.
This customer had a beautiful stand of Cryptomeria and Leyland Cypress trees that provided privacy between neighboring properties. Over time, roots began surfacing on the adjacent property and were pushing against the neighbor's air conditioning units. Rather than removing the trees, we installed a commercial-grade BioBarrier® system to redirect root growth and protect nearby structures while preserving the healthy screen of trees. The installation helped address the root issues while allowing the trees to remain an attractive feature of the landscape.

What is a root barrier?

A root barrier is an underground barrier designed to redirect roots away from structures while preserving healthy trees whenever possible. Root barriers are commonly used to protect foundations, sidewalks, driveways, pools, septic systems, retaining walls, air conditioning units, and neighboring properties.

Which Root Barrier Is Best?

No single root barrier is right for every situation.  Different tree species, root systems, and structures require different materials and installation methods.  At Lombardo Tree Service, we evaluate each property individually to determine whether HDPE barriers, BioBarrier® systems, or specialized bamboo barriers will provide the most effective long-term solution.

HDPE Root Barriers Use for:
  • Sidewalks
  • Driveways
  • Foundations
  • Retaining walls
  • Pool decks
  • General root deflection
  • Long linear installations
  • Running bamboo containment
  • Property line barriers
  • Areas where a physical barrier is preferred

BioBarrier® Root Control Use for:
  • Air conditioning units
  • Sidewalks and driveways
  • Foundations
  • Pools
  • Septic systems
  • Sewer lines

BioBarrier® root barriers can be installed alongside residential sewer laterals to help prevent root intrusion and protect underground plumbing. By redirecting and suppressing root growth near vulnerable pipes, BioBarrier® helps reduce the risk of costly sewer line repairs and backups while preserving healthy trees.
Bamboo Barriers Use Heavy Duty HDPE
  • Running bamboo
  • Privacy screens
  • Property line disputes
  • Preserving existing bamboo
  • Preventing unwanted spread

Frequently Asked Questions:

What types of root barriers are available?
Several types of root barriers are available, including:
  • HDPE physical barriers
  • BioBarrier® root control systems
  • Bamboo barriers
  • Fabric barriers
  • Metal barriers
  • Concrete barriers
The most common systems used for long-term protection are HDPE barriers and BioBarrier® systems.

What is BioBarrier®?
BioBarrier® combines a durable root barrier with timed-release nodules designed to discourage root intrusion.  It helps redirect roots away from structures while preserving desirable trees.

What is an HDPE root barrier?
HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) barriers are heavy-duty plastic barriers installed vertically in the soil.  They physically redirect roots deeper into the ground where they are less likely to damage hardscapes and structures.

Can bamboo be contained instead of removed?
Yes. In many cases, homeowners can preserve the privacy and appearance of bamboo without removing it.  A professionally installed bamboo barrier helps contain underground rhizomes and prevents unwanted spreading.

Can root barriers protect foundations?
Yes. Root barriers are commonly used to help protect:
  • Foundations
  • Sidewalks
  • Driveways
  • Pools
  • Septic systems
  • Retaining walls
  • Air conditioning units
  • Underground utilities
  • Neighboring properties

Will a root barrier harm my tree?
No.  Properly installed root barriers are designed to redirect roots rather than damage healthy trees. The goal is to preserve valuable trees while protecting nearby structures.

Can root barriers be installed around existing trees?
Yes. Root barriers are frequently installed around established trees when roots begin causing problems or threatening structures.

How deep are root barriers installed?
Installation depth depends on the species and site conditions.  Each project is evaluated individually to determine the most effective depth and placement.  Depths typically range from 18-48 inches.

How long does BioBarrier® last?
BioBarrier® systems are designed to provide approximately 15 years of root control and often continue performing beyond that period.

How long do HDPE root barriers last?
Heavy-duty HDPE root barriers are considered permanent solutions.  Underground service life is commonly measured in decades, and many manufacturers project life expectancies exceeding 50 years.

Why not simply remove the tree?
Tree removal is not always necessary.  Root barriers often allow homeowners to preserve mature trees, privacy screens, and valuable landscapes while preventing costly damage to structures.

Do root barriers require maintenance?
Most professionally installed root barriers require little or no maintenance and are designed to provide long-term protection.

Do you install root barriers throughout Metro Atlanta?
Yes. Lombardo Tree Service provides professional root barrier installation throughout Marietta and Metro Atlanta for residential and commercial properties.

Can BioBarrier® be used for weed control?
Yes.  BioBarrier® was developed for both root control and weed suppression.  The patented trifluralin nodules create a zone that inhibits root tip growth, preventing many weeds and invasive roots from becoming established.  BioBarrier® is especially useful around sidewalks, air conditioning units, pools, sewer lines, foundations, and other areas where long-term protection is desired.  For ordinary planting beds, traditional mulching methods are usually more economical.
